Overview

STEM CELL BIOLOGY AND REGENERATIVE MEDICINE - A DISCOVERY THAT CHANGED OUR WORLD

Thanks to a groundbreaking discovery made by a Japanese scientist, Shinya Yamanaka, MD, PhD, in 2006, the major focus of many Gates Center investigators’ research is now adult stem cells; as opposed to embryonic stem cells that, despite their potential to generate any cell in the body, have been ethically and politically controversial. Essentially, Dr. Yamanaka discovered that he could reprogram adult skin cells into cells that for all intents and purposes are the same as embryonic stem cells from which they can become anything in the body. Through this reprogramming, the controversy over having to destroy an early fertilized embryo is averted and the potentially serious issue of immune rejection is alleviated. As a result of this amazing discovery, Dr. Yamanaka opened a pathway with tremendous potential for developing new treatments and cures for a myriad of diseases affecting our world. He received the Nobel Prize in Medicine in 2012.

The Gates Center for Regenerative Medicine has made great strides in accelerating scientific discovery from the laboratory to human therapies. We look forward to advancing our vision to establish the Gates Center and the Anschutz Medical Campus as a major player in the fast developing space of regenerative medicine and stem cell therapies.

At the Speed of Science

We believe in continuous motion—answering questions, solving problems and never settling for “it can’t be done.” By working together and maintaining momentum, we can safely create vital human therapies more efficiently and effectively than ever before.

Unlocking Our Bodies' Potential

Stem cell technology can fundamentally change the future of human health. At the Gates Center, we unlock the true potential of personalized medicine using the power of our own bodies.

“I built this team knowing that the best results come from a diversity of talent. That’s what makes Gates different: our purposeful objective to concentrate a range of research in a single center.”

– Dennis Roop, Director of The Gates Center

Forward Together

Our comprehensive Center is at the heart of the University of Colorado Anschutz Medical Campus. The Gates Biomanufacturing Facility, located steps away and operated by the Gates Center, is a campus-wide partnership among:

THE GATES CENTER • UNIVERSITY OF COLORADO ANSCHUTZ MEDICAL CAMPUS • UNIVERSITY OF COLORADO SCHOOL OF MEDICINE • CHILDREN’S HOSPITAL COLORADO • UCHEALTH • THE GATES FRONTIERS FUND

Join the Movement

The rhythm of regeneration is the heart of The Gates Center, and it creates a valuable opportunity for those with a vision to be a part of it. Join us in our quest to move meaningful therapies off the bench and to the bedside.
